From a subtle and intangible idea conceived and then drawn on paper in soft and fluid lines by the hand of Japanese master Kengo Kuma, the project developed gradually through a painstakingly complex production phase, to achieve the physical materialization of architectural form. The former Bastardini hospital, a forgotten treasure right in the heart of Bologna, soon became an unexpected setting.
The Stonescape installation presented at Bologna Water Design 2012 was brought to life by Agape, Il Casone and Mapei.
Rendering this unique work possible was the mastery of production, technical expertise and the strong inclination to innovate of the companies involved in the project, where craftsmanship and the industrial process merge seamlessly.
The walls of this traditional Italian building, its spacious vaults and openings, combined with the concave and convex lines of Stonescape that trace the exhibition route on the ground, create a novel spatial relationship. The lighting effects created between the water surface and the Pietra Forte Fiorentina add to the warmth of the atmosphere.
The central scene of this magical artificial “aqueolithic” oasis, as if set in stone, becomes the perfect backdrop for Agapes products – the Spoon XL and In & Out bathtubs by Benedini and Bjhon washbasins designed by the late Angelo Mangiarotti which emerge from the water surface like domestic sculptures. Speaking of his collaboration with Agape, Kengo Kuma said: “I wanted to set the Agape products within a striking landscape rather than in a building and to seek to combine such a beautiful material as Pietra Serena with the fluidity of the water. The three elements of stone, white Cristalplant and water coexist in a composition that generates a continuous lithic landscape: this is the meaning I have given to Stonescape, and which is clear right from the name of the installation”.
Stonescape was inaugurated on 25 September during an event attended by over 600 people.
Kengo Kuma, who attended the event, was particularly pleased with the final result, which was perfectly in keeping with the original project.
The event aroused keen interest and enthusiasm among the many visitors, mostly architects, experts and local personalities, who attended the 5 days of Bologna Water Design enlivening, what is more, a little-known part of town that usually remains in the twilight.
